The legendary 2026 24h Nürburgring delivered one of the most dramatic endurance racing stories in recent years.

Held at the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife, the race featured changing weather, massive crashes, mechanical heartbreak, emotional DNFs, and a sold-out crowd witnessing history unfold over 24 relentless hours.

With four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen making his highly anticipated 2026 24h Nürburgring debut, global attention on the endurance classic reached unprecedented levels.

The 2026 24h Nürburgring attracted an estimated crowd of more than 352,000 spectators, making it one of the biggest editions in the event’s history. Campsites around the Nordschleife were packed days before the green flag, while grandstands and fan zones remained full throughout the weekend. Saturday reportedly sold out for the first time ever.

As expected from the unpredictable Eifel region, weather played a major role in the race outcome. Cold temperatures, intermittent rain showers, damp patches, and low-grip conditions made survival as important as outright pace.

Several sections of the Nordschleife became extremely slippery during the opening hours. Teams constantly switched between slick tyres and wet-weather compounds as rain intensity changed corner by corner around the 25-kilometre circuit.

Drivers repeatedly described the circuit as “treacherous,” especially during night-time stints when visibility dropped and traffic management became critical.

Strong Start as Team Verstappen Mercedes Takes Early Lead

The race began with intense battles among Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, BMW, Aston Martin, and Ford entries. The #3 Team Verstappen Mercedes-AMG GT3 quickly established itself as a front-runner after excellent stints from Dani Juncadella and Verstappen himself.

Verstappen’s double stint during changing weather conditions became one of the standout moments of the race. Despite being relatively inexperienced in Nürburgring endurance competition, he displayed remarkable confidence in traffic and wet conditions, building a healthy gap at the front.

By the sixth hour, the #3 Mercedes had moved into the lead after perfectly timing a switch to wet tyres as rain intensified.

Massive Crashes Shock 24h Nürburgring Crowd

The race saw several major accidents, especially during slippery conditions in the early stages.

One of the biggest incidents involved Porsche driver Kévin Estre, who crashed heavily after spinning on fluid left on the racing line near Brünnchen. The impact damaged the Manthey Porsche beyond immediate recovery and eliminated one of the favourites from victory contention.

Moments later, Indian racer Arjun Maini crashed the #64 Ford Mustang GT3 at the same slippery section after encountering the fluid spill. The Mustang suffered major damage in what became one of the defining crash sequences of the race.

Another major DNF came when Alex Sims and the #16 Scherer Sport PHX entry were caught in a chain-reaction collision during a Code 60 zone confusion, heavily damaging the front of the car.

Ferrari driver Thierry Vermeulen also retired after contact with a Porsche Cayman destroyed his Ferrari 296 GT3 during an overtaking attempt.

Mechanical Failures and DNFs Destroy Victory Hopes

The 2026 24h Nürburgring once again proved that outright speed means nothing without reliability.

Multiple front-running teams suffered punctures, suspension damage, drivetrain failures, overheating issues, and electronic gremlins throughout the night.

The biggest heartbreak came in the final hours when Verstappen’s leading #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 suddenly developed a catastrophic driveshaft failure while comfortably leading the race. The car had controlled the event for more than 21 hours and looked set for a famous victory.

The driveline damage forced the car into lengthy repairs, effectively ending its victory challenge with just over three hours remaining.

Although the car eventually returned to the track for ceremonial classification laps, it finished far behind the leaders after losing around 20 laps.

Mercedes-AMG Finally Returns to Nürburgring Glory

After Verstappen’s heartbreak, another Mercedes-AMG entry inherited control of the race.

The #80 Mercedes-AMG GT3 driven by Maro Engel, Luca Stolz, Fabian Schiller, and Maxime Martin kept a cleaner and more consistent run during the final phase to secure overall victory in the 2026 24h Nürburgring.

The victory marked Mercedes-AMG’s first 2026 24h Nürburgring win since 2016, ending a decade-long drought at the legendary endurance event.

In the closing stages, drama continued behind the leaders as the #84 Lamborghini moved into second position after the #34 Aston Martin lost crucial time under a late Code 60 period.

Max Verstappen’s Nürburgring Debut Becomes Biggest Story of the Weekend

Even without victory, Verstappen became the central story of the 2026 24h Nürburgring.

His adaptability to GT3 endurance racing impressed teams, drivers, and fans alike. Mercedes-AMG reportedly praised how quickly he mastered traffic management and Nordschleife conditions.

Despite the heartbreaking late failure, Verstappen stated he would like to return to the event in the future if his Formula 1 schedule allows.

For many fans, the 2026 edition will be remembered as “the race Verstappen nearly won.”
