Stage decor collapses at Mundhwa Holi event in Pune, leaving 15-16 injured. Probe underway into safety lapses and event permissions. Police begin inquiry. Pune | March 3: What began as a vibrant Holi celebration in Mundhwa turned chaotic after a portion of the stage décor structure collapsed during a public event on Sunday afternoon, leaving 15–16 people injured. The incident occurred at a Holi gathering organised in the Mundhwa area of Pune, where a large crowd had assembled to celebrate the festival of colours. According to preliminary information, a decorative installation mounted above the stage reportedly gave way, falling onto attendees standing close to the platform. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the structure came crashing down. “There was loud music and people dancing. Suddenly, we heard a cracking sound and within seconds, the décor fell,” said a local resident who was present at the venue. Emergency services were rushed to the spot, and the injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Most of the injuries are said to be minor to moderate, including bruises and fractures, though officials are yet to release a detailed medical update on all victims. Local police from the Mundhwa police station reached the venue shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area. A preliminary inquiry has been initiated to determine whether safety protocols were overlooked during the installation of the temporary stage structure. Authorities are also examining whether prior permissions were obtained and if structural safety checks were conducted before the event commenced. Organisers are expected to be questioned as part of the investigation. The mishap has raised fresh concerns over safety compliance at large public gatherings, especially during festive celebrations where temporary stages and decorative installations are commonly erected. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
