Honda ADV 160 Patented in India: Maxi-Scooter Launch Likely?

Japanese two-wheeler giant Honda has patented the design of the Honda ADV 160 in India, sparking fresh speculation about the company’s entry into the growing premium maxi-scooter segment.

The premium scooter category in India has steadily expanded over the past few years as buyers increasingly look for sporty styling, highway comfort, and touring capability over traditional commuter-focused scooters. Bringing the Honda ADV 160 in India could mark as an opportunity to target younger riders and enthusiasts wanting something more distinctive than a standard automatic scooter.

The patent filing surfaced this week suggests that Honda is at least evaluating the ADV-style scooter for the Indian market.

The Honda ADV 160 is already sold in several international markets and is known for blending scooter practicality with rugged adventure-inspired styling. Unlike conventional family scooters, the ADV 160 carries a tall windscreen, muscular bodywork, sharp LED lighting, stepped seat, long-travel suspension setup, and semi-adventure ergonomics that give it a distinct road presence.

If Honda launches the ADV 160 in India, it would directly rival the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160, both of which currently occupy the sporty premium scooter space. The brand presently lacks a performance-oriented maxi-scooter in its Indian lineup, making the Honda ADV 160 a potentially important addition to its portfolio.

Internationally, the Honda ADV 160 is powered by a 157cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine producing around 16 bhp and 14.7 Nm of torque.

The scooter uses telescopic front forks, twin rear shock absorbers, a 14-inch front wheel, and a 13-inch rear wheel setup. Honda also offers features such as keyless ignition, a digital instrument cluster, USB charging, traction control, and full-LED lighting in global markets.

Reports indicate that the patent was officially registered in late 2025, although Honda has not announced any launch timeline yet. Like many global patent filings, this could simply be an intellectual property protection exercise rather than confirmation of an India debut. However, Honda’s recent filings for products like the Airblade scooter and WN7 electric motorcycle hint that the company is actively studying more premium lifestyle-oriented two-wheelers for India.

Community reactions online have also been largely positive, with enthusiasts praising the ADV 160’s liquid-cooled engine, touring-friendly ergonomics, and adventure-inspired design. Some Reddit users even described it as the kind of product that could finally give the Aerox 155 stronger competition in India’s performance scooter segment.

As of now, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has not officially confirmed whether the Honda ADV 160 will be launched locally. Still, the patent filing has certainly generated excitement among scooter enthusiasts who have long been waiting for a rugged premium maxi-scooter from Honda.

The above-mentioned features are currently available in international-spec models of the Honda ADV 160. It is expected that Honda could offer most, if not all, of these features in the India-spec version as well.
