Muslim community files complaint against Bhosari BJP MLA Mahesh Landge for alleged hate speech in Pune. Police examining the case.

Pune: Controversy has erupted around Mahesh Landge, the BJP MLA from Bhosari in Pune district, after members of the Muslim community filed a formal complaint accusing him of delivering an inflammatory speech that allegedly targeted Muslims and could incite communal tension.

According to the complaint submitted to senior officials of the Pune Police, Landge allegedly made controversial remarks during a public meeting held on March 2, 2026 in the Pimpri-Chinchwad region. Community representatives claimed the speech contained statements that promoted religious polarisation and hurt the sentiments of Muslims.

The memorandum demanding legal action was submitted to the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime). Complainants have urged authorities to register an FIR and initiate criminal proceedings against the MLA, stating that the remarks could disturb communal harmony in the city.

In the complaint, members of the Muslim community alleged that despite holding a constitutional post, Landge used “irresponsible and provocative language” that could deepen divisions between communities. They argued that such statements have the potential to create tension in an already sensitive social environment.

The controversy has triggered political reactions across the region. Opposition leaders and civil society groups have demanded strict action, while some have called for a thorough investigation into the speech and its context.

Meanwhile, supporters of the BJP leader have defended him, claiming that his remarks were taken out of context and were part of a broader political address.

The Pune Police have not yet confirmed whether an FIR has been registered in the matter. Officials said the complaint is being examined and further action will be taken based on legal review.

The incident has once again brought attention to the issue of hate speech in political discourse, which under Indian law can attract criminal charges if it promotes enmity between religious communities or threatens public order.
