A violent incident broke out in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, after a dispute during Holi celebrations allegedly led to the death of a 26-year-old man.

New Delhi: The victim, identified as Tarun Kumar, was reportedly beaten to death following an altercation between two families.

According to the police, the dispute began during Holi when coloured water from a balloon accidentally splashed on a Muslim woman from another family. The balloon had allegedly been thrown by an 11-year-old girl who was playing Holi on the terrace with relatives. The balloon burst on the road, and the coloured water splashed onto the woman, triggering an argument between members of the two families.

The argument soon escalated into a violent confrontation. Reports suggest that a group of individuals allegedly attacked Tarun while he was returning home after celebrating Holi with friends. He sustained severe injuries in the assault and later died during treatment at a hospital on March 5.

Family members of the victim have alleged that the attackers brutally assaulted Tarun and even threw large stones onto his chest while he was lying injured on the road.

Following the youth’s death, tensions rose in the locality. Members of several Hindu organisations expressed anger over the incident. On March 6, hundreds of people gathered outside the Uttam Nagar Police Station demanding strict action against those responsible.

Police said approximately 500 protesters had gathered at the site, while 200–300 police personnel were deployed to control the situation. During the protest, a few vehicles were reportedly set on fire, but police quickly extinguished the flames and brought the situation under control.

Earlier, the organisation Bajrang Dal had issued an ultimatum to the police demanding strict actions against the accused. After the deadline passed, a large number of supporters gathered outside the police station to stage a protest.

Police officials confirmed that four people, including Kamruddin and Mushtaq, have been arrested in connection with the case, while one minor has been detained. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend others allegedly involved in the attack.

Authorities stated that the situation in the area remains tense but under control. A heavy deployment of the Rapid Action Force and Delhi Police has been made in the narrow lanes of the locality where the incident occurred as the investigation continues.
